Red Dining Room

I love bold colors offset by white, and that bluing trick I learned years ago painting Commercial Draggers.Fishing Boats to you from away from the coast.

Comments

  • "Just" have two finish coats left for the woodwork (just primed in the photo). 11 years and I finally have one ground floor room near completion--at least the two floors above are 95% complete.

Next shot shows the same room c. 1922 when it was the "ladies' parlor".

    Is the red too much?

    Proper original photo now.

    Nice

I really like that color red. I painted my dining room the exact same red and white 4 years ago. It goes well in old homes. (Mine is an 1870's farmhouse) I have had lots of positive feedback from most people that come over.

    That *is* incredible, Mike

Is it mottled or ragged? It has a soft look to it which tones down any intensity.

    Will the trim be white?

What brand of paint are you using and what color numbers? Getting ideas you know..

  • Just the plain paint--4 coats and 3 gallons with one more coat and another gallon after everything else is done. Benjamin Moore "Poppy Red"--believe it's color 1715 but I'm not at the right place to check my "decorator" chip set. I did use "auto levels" on Photoshop--overall red is very similar to reality on two different monitors. I believe it difficult to show shading with nearly pure red on a computer monitor other than using pure black.

Definitely white trim. Benjamin Moore satin white Impervo with 1/128 oz of bright blue (1/2 BB in paint mixer speak). The touch of bright blue makes a VERY crisp white.

I will have to remember that

about the BB. I am partial to Benjamin Moore but of late use "Fine Paints of Europe" made in Holland. Not cheap but the gloss rocks.

Looking forward to your completion; I bet you are too!

    Nifty blue trick

Here our white laundry is brightened with a few drops of blue coloring in the last rinse. It only makes sense it should work on paints as well.

A good friend of mine works in a chemical plant where they manufacture optical bleaches. Their [blue coloring], they sell to both paint and laundry detergent factories. Do paint stores sell separate optical bleaches?

  • Yikes! The other photo is the ORIGINAL dining room. Will correct tomorrow.

I like the Paint and wainscoatting

buh you gotta get that plumber back over there in a hurry,....the rads are way outta plumb, and the Placement! plus,.. i think you are going to run into venting issues with that boiler so close to the windows *~/:)

  • That old panel rad will be built into the kitchen island and it's leaning on the oven.

Have the "bronzing" for the main rad. Will still try antique silver. Base coat will be medium grey.

"Boiler" is big horizontal SS Viessmann tank that took a HARD fall. Tank perfect but it took me quite a few hours to make the frame and panels at least close to straight...

  • Thanks Jason.

Color has been planned for the same 11 years.

    I knew it...

    Mike,

Even though you live in Missouri, you MUST be a Nebraska Cornhusker fan! Nebraska colors all the way, and I know you will be rooting along side me for the Huskers during the USC (Univ of Spoiled Children) game on Saturday.

    Go Huskers!

    Regards,

    PR

    Looks familiar

Our dining room in our 1882 Victorian is painted "Late Tomatoe". My wife picked out the color and it is a darker red than you have there but rd in a DR is very fitting. I will try to post pictures a little later. By the way Mike, thanks again for your help on the V-200 install. This past winter was very cozy and we have all the DHW we can stand for as long as we stand it. Regards Bernie
Pictures attached. Last one is the living room and just to make it feel homey to you I had to get one in of the DR radiator
