9-11 truck

Options
It would be nice to see some sort listing of the names of the volunteers who worked at Ground Zero from Day One to the day the job was done. They're paying for that effort with their health and the government's (local, state and federal) foot dragging or outright refusal to make good on the promise of health benefits.

$125 million or so was promised by the federal government, only to get removed to "help balance the budget". Only with vigorous campaigning by NY's 2 Senators was this money finally restored. 5 years later!

Since I live by the WTC and volunteered there for 3 months, I hope that any effects are short term. Though it doesn't seem like that's the case. So far, for me, the physical health effects are minor compared to so many others...

JMHO, but I had to get it off my chest...

    Check this out!!

Trucker who has painted his cab and trailer with the names of all those who lost their lives in 9/11. The trucker's name is John Holmgren from Shafer, Minn. The trucker has been "pulled over" numerous times just so the troopers can get their picture taken with the truck.

I wonder how many trucks it would take to list all those killed in Iraq. That would be a great way to have their memory live on too.

    less than 911

To date there have been fewer American soldiers killed in Iraq than citizens killed on 9/11. Don't get me wrong, I feel one Soldier killed is too many, I am just stating the fact.

    How about

considerably fewer trucks than it would take to list the names of the Iraqi folks who were NOT killed in Iraq because we acted on their behalf....

    Idunno, just guessing.

watching the 9/11 shows yesterday it occured to me

They detailed repeatedly that the terrorist organizations stated we "Americans fear death while they embrace death". I've been mulling that over.........

They simply don't get it. We don't fear death, at least not in the sense they meant, we embrace death when necessary - as did the passengers on that last flight. Must have been one hell of a surprise for the cowards that hijacked that ride.

The difference is, IMHO, that we revere life before death and celebrate its best efforts. While we no doubt appear to be divided from an outsiders viewpoint, we will solidify and unite - no metter our idealogies - when we are attacked as we were on 9/11. Fat, complacent and lazy might fit in times of peace, but united and fierce in our resolve best describes us following any event like 9/11.

They've turned hordes of us into folks who would kill at the drop of a hat, where we would have previously chosen a different path. Ordinary citizens laying down their lives in order to protect others they would place in harm's way - that must have been a surprise. We'd do it again & again & again. You can kill a few, but not all of us, and our zest for life can't be exterminated nor our will to live in freedom.

Another stark contrast I see: we revere our dead. We celebrate their lives, not their demise and we don't dance on the graves of our enemies.

    Thank you, sir.

Well said. I believe the Axis powers made the same fatal mistake in WWII.

Of course, back then Americans thought all Japaneese were nearsigted and thus bad shots....

    Very nice, Dave.

Your words were a very powerful read, and spot on, too.

The number of US soldiers killed HAS recently overtaken the total number of people killed on 9/11. If you only count "citizens killed on 9/11", as you said, then of course the number was overtaken months ago, since many at the WTC were not US citizens (and therefore don't count as human?).

But I wasn't just couting US soldiers. Iraqis are human too. Over 25,000 have died since the invasion and resulting lack of civil order, a very large fraction of a much smaller country, and many more than Saddamn ever killed.

    25000

Saddam had many more than 25k killed during his reign. How many Kurds did he gas in the '90's ?

Civil order was certainly there when he was in power, too. Disagree and be stupid enough to say it out loud to the wrong "friend" and get killed for it. Now, they vote.

And it's okay for you to count Iraqi deaths into your total, but not all the deaths of the WTC, Pentagon and Flight 93 ?

    still seething below the surface

Watching the 9/11 shows was gut-wrenching. The overwhelming emotions finally spilled over when I heard the first name and tolling of that bell at ground zero. How Dan & TLM manage to get through that as volunteers at the site is amazing to me. I'd be a blubbering mess. But, about one minute into my leaky phase, it struck me: it's not just the emotional connection to the families, it's the roiling tide of deep-seated anger that I may never be able to deal with & that's what pushed me over the edge. That's also why my mind-set was altered regarding what I believe would be the ability to pull a trigger without any remorse or regrets. My faith in humanity now includes the knowledge that there are animals among us who, due to their willingness to embrace death while cowardly killing innocent civilians - many of them their own too, can't be reasoned with, trusted or let to live once discovered or confronted.

Life will never be the same: it never is after a galvanizing incident like 9/11, but it goes on and we recover. The next incident will be gut wrenching too, but not as devastating to things like our economy and we'll be quicker to recover emotionally as incidents loom less large on our collective psyche. The shock & awe factor will be much diminished.

Now that we all know how depraved the enemy really is at heart, citizens' reactions - like the last flight - will be swift and severe.

You've really got a handle on it. More people need your level of understanding. Unfortunately, the vocal ones are still clueless regarding the resolve and reasons of the ENEMY. They will not stop until they win or we kill them.
"Dialogue" is a load of crap. I bet Nicholas Berg had "dialogue" with them right before they decapitated him....

    and that pretty much defines

a cowardly act - decapitating a bound individual while hiding behind a hooded mask to shield their identity. There is no diety that would bless or condone such barbarism.

They were and I suspect still are counting on their misguided perception of America to cut and run when the going gets tough. Thankfully, we have not and I can only hope we stay in the fight to finish this. This will not go away. Really like your point of view Dave.

    Imagine reading this list

Too bad we are not as galvanized into action about the thousands of Americans killed EVERY YEAR by drunk drivers, thousands murdered EVERY YEAR, and about the kids abused by parents and relatives, often for many years!

    or the deaths

caused by bacterial amplification in residential hot water systems - estimated to be around 10,000 each year. Then there's the deaths from hot water scalding that could also be prevented. I'm trying to make a difference.

There's no easy ride through life.

    This morning

a soldier was going home from the hospital where he was recovering after returning from Iraq. He had a police and fire dept escort from the town which was met by the police and fire depts of each town he came thru. Here is the escort on Main Street in my town. We merchants on Main Street set out our flags, my eagle/flag stained glass panel was in the window with the light box on. People came out of the shops to wave. Vets and residents gathered in front of the town hall where the convertible stopped so all could say welcome home. Here are a couple of pics.

    2 more towns

And he had two more towns to go to get home. Our police and fire dept escort was being met at the town line by the next group.
