Cell Phone start-up for snowmelt system

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your input. Perhaps I can solve this situation with your suggestions. Grumpy

  • I installed a snow melt system a year ago for a chap who wanted a "basic" system. So I installed a simple on/off system with a 12 hour timer. Now he is asking for some method of calling in via his cell phone, while on his way to this home from his other place 4 hours away, and starting the system. I used a Munchkin 199 for the heat plant. Have any of you been involved in remote starts, and if so how did you do it?

I have used freeze protection that will call a given # so I am sure they make something that can communicate with the heat system. I couldn't even tell you where to Begin on looking for this software. You might be able to have the cell phone trigger a clap on, clap off type of deal.....;-) Only kidding....

    phnone dialer

    Grumpy,

A company called Control Products Inc. makes a freeze alarm that will call out if temp is to high or to low. In addition to those features, it also allows someone to call in and enter a 4-digit number from a touch tone phone (cell or other) that will either open or close a set of dry contacts. This set of contacts can then be used to do just about anything you want. The model # is an "FA-D2".

    Remotes

Both Tekmar and Viessmann make controls with modem connections that will enable or disable the system. The slab should "idle" though and not have to reach design temperature at the time of snowfall, or the slab could crack (and other things). The snowmelt system should have a driveway sensor for trouble-free operation.

    Sensaphone

Twice already I've used the FGD-1104 from Sensaphone. They work great! The best price I found was about $290.00 from Graybar. If they don't have it in stock, they can order it. When ordering it, I've also added remote temperature sensors for outdoors. When set up with one, in a human voice, it will tell you the indoor temp at the unit and the outdoor temp at the remote sensor! Check it out: http://www.sensaphone.com/sensaphone-1104.html
