Any opinions on lighter than Sch 40 pipe for heat pump loops for 2-1/2" - 4" with grooved mechanical couplings?

Depends on the pressure and velocity.

Generally Sch. 40 is the standard as you know, but for low pressure, Sch. 30 or even Sch. 10 has been used. Ugh. Also Sch. 40 PVC had a good run in the Developer '80's, but let's not go back there, shall we?

    don't

Nope uh uh no way ......but thats just my opinion :) Even schedule 40 will turn into a mess if the tower goes down on a hot day, even worse if a boiler runs wild.

    You of course mean

the PVC plastic option, Marty. No concerns on the metallic pipe I take it?

True, the PVC looked like the Loch Ness Monster or Champ the Lake Champlain serpent after a fashion.

The Value Engineering package the contractor offered ignored our edict that hanger spacing was to more or less be half that of steel.... When pipe sags to the point that you get air pockets, you have a bigger problem.

    whoops

Missed the grooved fittings then saw the letters pvc and started typing while remembering a rather spectacular failure of a pvc loop. 40 is "standard" and people are used to working with it and its usually on the shelf somewhere for whatever thats worth.

We have used schd. 10 with no problems. I wouldn't use it on any type of open system though.

What are the code ramifications of this??????????

    Nice and light.
