Tankless customer

that the tankless water heaters might have worked if they had been piped in a primary secondary set up. As it was all four circulators had to be calling to initiate the tankless units to fire and then as the tstats turned off one by one they would work until there was just 2 circs running, depending on which zones were left and the length of their runs. I could have repiped to the tankless units to P/S, but was concerned that if they had problems afterwards I would havve inherited problems that were not rightfully mine. The units would also trip on safety when they got near 180 degrees, and the customer would have to relite the pilots. Also the 2 pre existing boilers added up to 200,000 btu's whereas the heat load showed only 90,000 btu's were needed. WW

    I'm working on a job

where the pre-existing boilers were replaced by 2 tankless water heaters. The Homeowners had just moved in last Fall and never had good consistant heat. I was the 6th contractor they brought in to try and fix the problem. The house wasnt so old so I wondered why the original boilers were replaced already. I found the clue I needed to explain it in the circuit breaker panel. 2 breakers listed Hydropulse one, and Hydropulse two. Ack!! I will try to post some before pics. The system is a 4 zone hydro air system fed from the basement with an indirect for domestic hot water.

    Are you

suggesting the Hydro-Pulse's are inferior, or that the current water heaters are?

I always respected H-P boilers as the for-runner of modern condensing boilers, having installed a few and making a handsome niche market in knowing how to service those pulsers I did not install.

Years ago, when Hydro-Therm (the maker of H-P boilers) sold and moved in with Mestek, they basically left the planet - as did the quality of the product, and replacement parts.

Have you had bad experiences with the H-P?

    Me too :)

I've still got 1/2 a dozen H-P boilers that only I will touch. Everyone else says replace them, I repair them. When the day comes that they REALLY need replacing, I'll be the one to do it. The best man to install equipment is the one who can fix it :)

Every time I get a new "helper" in the Autumn, they are amazed at the variety of equipment I service in a single day. Gravity furnaces w/ 1925 conversion burners in the a.m. and mod/cons in the p.m. w/ a sprinkle of oil for lunch :)

I like the copper flex lines on those water heaters...
And, are those circs mounted with each zone valve ?

    I've had a bad time

with the hydropulses. Some of them have been improperly installed to be fair. Our library has had one putt putting along for years. I love hearing the very distinctive sound of the flu as I walk up at night to return books. I've seen them clog up, gas valves go bad, sparker stop sparking. condensate corrode away. It's colored my perception of them. I'm sure it's like Pit Bulls. If I took the time I could learn to love them, but,.... no.

    Sawzall surgery

The customer was tired of all the problems so I said I could make things work best with a repipe, and redesign. I took out one of the tankless heaters, and hung a Prestige Boiler in it's place. I then cut out the old manifold with the zone valves and wet rotor circs with their motors sticking up in the air. I repiped the remaining tankless heater so it would be in series with the indirect so they could have domestic hot water while I worked. It worked great when installed properly with good water flow. I'm almost finished. Another 4 or 5 hours to tie up loose ends and a combustion test to ice the cake. To Learn More About This Professional, Click Here to Visit Their Ad in "Find A Professional"

Gordon and I like the Pro-Press too.

Nice job, Wayne. The transition from hack job to mechanical perfection is stunning. Are they going to track their gas consumption this winter?

Also, what's happening with that Trane Vapor convector job?

    Thanks

I can solder but why spend the time when the propress is so nice. I'm sure they will find a big difference in operating cost. I bet the wife will track it. She seems to be very organized and on top of things. Frank, On the Steam job with the Trane Convectors, I told the GC we would have to stay with Steam, but would be able to move the pipe up, and he never called me back again. My guess is the HO is willing to put up with the low pipes for now. I hope it isn't because they didnt like my answer. :( Are you going to visit The Lost Art of Steam Heating seminar in Rockville? Dans coming Oct 4th.

What a difference a functioning brain makes!!

    Nice job WW.

I don't think I have ever seen a circ and a zone valve used on the same loop before. Any idea what the original installer did that for?
  • Can't make that one

too much going on! Look for some more Solaia pics in the next couple of weeks.....

    I can only imagine

that is was to stop ghost flow. They may not have heard of a flo-control valve. I'm glad I got to straighten things out. (and people pay me to have all this fun, it don't seem right.) :P WW
