Round radiator
Steamhead (in transit)
Member Posts: 6,688
Gordon and I went to pick up the radiator today, in Oldtown, MD which is south of Cumberland. Took my Ranger since it gets much better mileage than the E250. Here are some shots of it- that's Sam Bennett, the antique dealer who was selling it for his friend Mike Santmyire. Thanks, Sam and Mike!
There's no name on it, but the tubes are screwed into the base and welded shut at the top, which makes me almost positive it's a Nason. It has 30 tubes which tallies with the Nason rating table in the Library, for a rating of about 30 square feet EDR. It is set up for two-pipe/air-vent operation. The air vent is a New York Air Valve adjustable unit, from the 1920s or 1930s I believe.
The radiator was found in the basement of the Meyers mansion in Meyersdale, PA. The mansion was built for Dr. Meyers in 1863, and the steam system was probably put in when the house was built. This little town had a district steam system for a while, after that the mansion had a coal-fired boiler. A benighted subsequent owner ripped out the steam a few years ago- Sam and Mike couldn't remember whether he put in baseboard hot water or scorched air. In any case, it won't be as comfortable as a properly operating steam system.
The Nason is now at our shop, waiting for that special project.

Not too far
for me!
I think it's a Nason. Let you know for sure when we go get it.
Thanks for the heads-up!

That's some front parlour furniture
Another hot piece of history rescued from the brink of a cold death. This will earn you and Gordon lots of goodwill.
Best regards.

Don't know yet
the last pair of rare rads I was keeping were two "Our Own" flue rads. I ended up trading them to Mad Dog for his house project.

Great I'm glad you got it. Anyone out there have any "Standard" rads for sale, especially in the 26" high size? I need to add 5 sections to my dining room radiator to compete with the heat loss in here.

Very nice.
and not too far from home. It must have been a nice drive out to that part of MD. I used to go to school 5 miles North of Cumberland. Beautiful area. BTW I have a client in Silver Spring looking for a nice CI radiator for his Living Room. Something wil scrollwork I'm thinking. Let me know if there's anything in Balmore worth trading, now that Jeff Conine is gone. WW

What EDR and dimensions? Steam or water?
I have a couple but there are a whole bunch of ornate rads at Second Chance, as of yesterday. That would be the only legitimate reason to venture near the Losers' Stadiums...

Wow!
That looks to be a perfect fit to replace our "phantom" radiator at the bottom of our stairway- let me know if you'd be willing to part with it!

The pre=existing rad
was hot water, 5 column, 26 inch high, and 14 sections, 2.5 inch per sections. I would go that size or bigger. We are demoing the gravity pipes in the basement and will be home running from a manifopld with PAP so we can balance after the fact if it's over sized. Does 2nd chance have a web site?? ( ps , dont be so hard on the O's just wait till next year. :0 ) WW

We've been saying "wait till next year" about the Orioles since 1984. It's a wonder more people haven't given up on them.
Consider using two smaller rads to get the EDR you need, if you can't find a monster unit.

Northern New Jersey. A ritzy salvage place has some laying in a pile of dirt rusting away, but they want $15 a "rung", as they called it. I think in the condition they are in they are worth 50 bucks total.0 -
And if the provenance is true
This round radiator was converting steam into warmth when Lincoln was alive.
