new boiler
Steamhead (in transit)

a boiler that can burn either oil or gas. If you have a hot-water system, you might like this Solaia SL375, shown here with a gas burner. It has a net rating of 79,000 BTUH. You can use it with an outdoor-reset controller.
There are several choices for steam boilers that are approved for use with oil or gas burners. One is the Columbia CSFH/Utica Starfire series. These are fairly standard vertical-flueway units. Also, Burnham is coming out with a newly engineered oil-fired steamer soon which is said to be a major advance in efficiency, but I don't know if they'll certify it with a gas burner (HINT.....)
This will put you in the driver's seat, since you will be able to burn whatever is cheapest per BTU by just having a pro change the burner. And unlike the typical open-bottomed atmospheric gas boiler, an oil-designed cast-iron boiler has the firing zone completely surrounded by water-backed cast iron. So it loses less heat.
Speaking of which, have you compared the cost per BTU of gas vs. oil in your area?

\"best\" gas-fired boiler
I'm looking for a new gas-fired boiler, about 70K BTUs. Presently using a 50-year old Weil Mclain oil-fired. I am looking for the best bank for the buck, reliable and efficient, and dependable, too, of course. I'm leaning toward a fixed-rate boiler with an outside-temp reset. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks . . . .0
