Bypass Piping

I can't think of the last time I installed a conventional boiler without allowing for boiler protection. It's not to late for you to protect your present boiler. While you are at it you may want to think about piping it with constant circulation and outdoor reset capabilities.

Bypass Piping
I have a 3 story 1600 sq ft. townhouse with a gas fired hot water system with cast iron radiators in New York. The boiler is a Slant Fin at least 7 or more years old. Temps run about 180 when the boiler heats up, but start much lower. As far as I can tell, there is no bypass piping. There is a 2nd zone in the basement with it's own pump to which I plan to add another cast iron radiator, since right now it has copper tube and fin convectors, that are useless. The boiler is oversized, IMHO, and fires at the beginning of the heating periods (once in am and once in pm, since we don't heat the house when we are at work, and then the radiators stay warm and adequately heat the house). How has this boiler survived without bypass piping? Do I need to do anything now?0 -
A bypass allows the boiler to be warm while a large mass of cold water moves through it, mixing with the warmed bypass. It is optional, and typically used on large mass systems with separate zones.
