3 way valve

Small volume low mass boiler- valve stroke and response time is slower than what the boiler can adjust to. I think you may need a buffer tank in there. Just a hunch.

    3way valve

I installed a new 3 way mixing valve for domestic hot water on a Laars boiler. The old valve was stuck wide open and overheated. The problem I have now is that it has erratic operation. It is a Powers valve # 434. It is set for 120 degrees and it fluctuates from 120 down to 95 and all stops in between. The system has a storage tank that feeds the 3 way and a recirculating pump. The hot water inlet and cold water inlet temps are fairly constant. No more than 5 degrees fluctuation on the HW side (135 to 140). On the off cycle ( no or little domestic HW flow, it climbs as high as 135 degrees. It does have a thermostat controlled solenoid valve on the mixed water side of the 3 way that is set for 120 degrees. Solenoid appears to work. Any good ideas? Thank you.

    mixed temps

Where is the return for the recirc connected? Could it be tempering the output of the valve? Did you try another element in the mixer? Is there any rhyme or reason to when this problem occurs or is it a constant thing?

There are some tricks to that install

especially when recircing with the new generation of 1070's.

Here is an excellent article by Julius Ballanco that shows and explains the how and whys.

    temps.

The recirculated circ loop is tapped at the end of the supply loop and terminates on the boiler riser, which in turn gets drawn into the storage tank by the high temp circ.
