from my collection.
Simple and accurate are the StickTemps from Watts Radiant.
A point and shoot infared gun.
Azel's dual digital.
A temperature head for your stick or VOM meter.
A HOBO temperature data logger.
These all have pros and cons, depending on what you need to know, how accurate and over what period of time.

Device to read pipe temperature
What do you guys use to to temporarily get a temperature reading from exposed boiler pipes? I'm not looking to attach something permanent and only need a visual temperature readout.
I plan to use it to determine the return temperatures of different loops.

CPS
makes a nice 4 station sensing system, utilizing thermistors. Nice for S & R sensing as well as superheat and subcooling measurements.
Edit: Google cps tm 2500 -

Point and shoot infrared guns are handy. Surfaces with a high shine, like new copper, will fool them however. Shot pump volutes or the iso flanges for better accuracy.
I love these Azel dual digitals. Easy to strap on, battery or 24 volt they capture min and max temperatures. Very handy and affordable. www.azeltec.com
Stick temps are now available from watts Radiant. Peel the back off and stick em on anything. They show color and the temperature. A lot like aquarium thermometers. They last a few years 180 and up seems to shorten their life. customers love them. www.wattsradiant.com
Oh, and a 4th would be a HOBO temperature data logger. All sorts of fun projects for these buggers. Eatherton os Mr. HOBO, if you need tips and tricks. www.onset.com
Also look into temperature heads for most VOM and stick meters. This Fieldpiece reads dual temp and differential
