  • hamerring in return line

I am getting hammering at the end of the cycle when burner shuts off on psi. steam main approx 30' away from boiler drops down and ties directly into return. the old boiler had a hihger water line. new boiler water line not much above return. i am planning on lowering reutrn. does anyone have input as to how much 6" 12"? below water level of boiler should it be. boiler has vapor stat set psi 8" and hamering stoped most of the time. at least i have not heard it but the homeowner has.
  • I'd try to

get the drop down from the Hartford Loop as low as possible , but it doesn't have to go as low as the floor . I usually keep it a diameter size above the floor in case it needs to be worked on in the future . Do you think the return line is high enough to be letting steam cross into it ?

    hartford connection

I'm presuming you are using a hartford connection instead of a check valve in the return line. Leaking check valves cause hammer towards the end of the cycle.

But you say it hammers just after burner shut off. I will bet that there is indeed a hartford connection and that the close nipple is actually above the water line. This connection must be made BELOW the water line.

This is fresh in my mind since I just repiped one last week like this. Hammered just after shut down in the vicinity of the hartford connection at the boiler. It did this for almost 15 years. No one caught it until now.

    and don't base your

measureing point of water level from the ''normal'' water level point, cause it won't stay there..base it from the lowest permmissible water point..not for the hartford loop, put that where its supposed to go..but for determining how far to drop the wet return.
