Dirrect Return Trap CHATTER

like a clanging monster after Trane two pipe system is running up steam for a while. Trap has been cleaned (was actually stuck in open position) and is in good condition. Starts up only shutting the valve and then releasing every few minutes (SNAPS shut, SNAPS open) but after blazing along for a while it sudenly breaks into a nasty stachato chattering which lasts for few seconds. What can cause chatter in a direct return trap? What are the sequential steps that this device follows to process condensate. There are three avenues to this trap, one taps in about 15 feet upstream on the TOP side of one of the two return legs which then feeds into the top of trap and then continues (second avenue) over to the right side rear top of the boiler near right above the Hot Water coil. The third avenue drops out the bottom of the canister through a couple check valve into the bottom of the boiler. (see photos) Thanks for your help. Jim/ALfred
