Short Cycling

We replaced an IBW steam boiler with a Peerless Steam boiler. The system has a Hoffman Loop as seen in figure 9 on page 234 of Dan Holohan's "Lost Art Of Steam Heating". We left the Hoffman Loop alone but had to lower the water line approx. 18". We replaced the thermostat and down fired the boiler and set the preeure to 1-1/2 lbs. but the system now short cyles. It does come up to pressure. Any ideas?

Lowered the water line 18" ( may have shot yourself in the shorts) water line keeps your wet returns wet. If you lower the water line you may have steam backing up the returns where water used to stop it. Measure from the celing in the boiler room down to the water line, take that mesurement and see if any of your drips or returns join together above that height. Lowering the waterline is the same as raising the return 18" above where it is now. Also, did you size the new boiler to the amount of radiation you have now? this new boiler may be putting out better than the old and is now over sized.0
