Split Amtrol tank

I just looked at a job where the 11 year old 40 gal. Amtrol hot water storage tank split right across the top of the tank. I've never seen or heard of this before, has anyone else seen this happen?

Doesn't surprise me
Amtrol had some quality problems and their distributers and wholesalers were less than forthright in dealing with them. Make sure your pressures are safe and that the Temperature and Pressure Relief Valve is installed correctly and in good working order.0 -
The tank will be replaced, but I did check the plate and the tank was rated for 150 psi, tested at 300 psi and the T&P valve was rated for 150 psi. It seems like the tank ruptured at less than the pressure rating for the relief valve. The normal city water pressure is no more than 80 psi.0 -
Not uncommon at all.0 -
The bladder
tank inside fails and then the steel outer shell rusts away.
Seen it, replaced em with something else, got No Tee Shirt.
