Transfer plate installation rig

With this slick installation method, how do your costs compare to Warmboard?

Do you think the pipe is well enough protected from the hardwood flooring installers?

    Run Forest, run!

Here is a shot of Scott on his 3rd day working off stilts. We set him up with a "walker." Nothing more than scaffolding on casters. It serves both as a safe harbor and a place to keep the plates and tools.

Scott was able to blast up around 4000 feet of plates in three days.

We also bought a new Senco to staple up the plates. Plenty of power, we had to crank the compressor down to 80psi.

I should have some good data for ME's installation survey as we will start tube installation tomorrow.

    Thanks for the numbers...

I hate those damned things. Stilts that is. Tom's got a pair that I've tried using. I must be getting too old. The floor seemed a LONG ways away to me, and if I ever were to suddenly meet it, it would most probably be at terminal velocity...

    Are those joists 12" OC?

    Heavy duty floor:-)

    Great job.

    Just don't drop any tools!

That involves dismounting to retrive them :) I haven't strapped them on yet, myself. Scott took to them quickly. Why argue with sucess :)

Yes those are 12" oc, good eye. The artichoke has pushed over 20 foot spans with this joist assembly! Tighter spacing and heavier duty TJI's with wider webs and top and bottom cords.

That was a surprise to us, and with TJI and some doublers we were not able to get two plates between many of the joists.

    These plates

are from Watts Radiant. They are the Radiant Engineering manufactured ThinFins 3/8" C fin.

Find them at SlantFin also. Shop for a dealer with stock nearby. Shipping aluminum gets $$ey :)

    Nail Gun???

    Hot Rod,
Is that a nail gun or a staple gun.
How long are the nails or staples and who makes them?I have used staple guns with wirsbo plates. Have to keep the compressor to the max.

Several months ago you made a post on a new home that you were hoping to get that would end up being the largest job you had done. Is this the job? Assume there will be more follow-up pics?

    Senco SNS45XP

is their midrange stapler. I run it at 80 psi.

The lighter finish staplers will not drive through yjr extruded aluminum. I tried them all at the dealer.

The key is the staple! You should use the N11BRB. 3/4 inches long. DO NOT use the galvanized version, they will just bend over. Need to use the steel one I mentioned.

I have also used a couple coil roof nailers. 3/4" nails are special order however and not always available. The stapler works better is is much less $$ per shot.

No I did not get that big job. But I got two smaller ones that will be more profitable and for a sharper GC :)

How did your plate job work out? Do you have more on deck?

    Plates worked well

hr, the plates worked really well. We built a jig based on the picture that you posted...used a 2 x 4 with slots cut into it and 1/2" conduit attached. Really made the plates go up faster and straighter. Thanks for the idea.

We've got quite a few pictures of the job and I will probably post them here at some point in time. Don't know when we will get to start the system up as this house is going at a snail's pace. We've done all we can do until we can pipe in the remaining 3 ECR heat pumps, and can't do that until the GC pours the concrete at the unit locations.

We have a small job using more of the plates, but nothing like the other job.

    Take Care,

    The stilts

remind me of a job where I strapped a couple of drywall mud buckets to my helpers feet. Worked OK but I wouldn't do it again. One benefit was he sure couldn't sneak up on you while wearing them. :) WW
