    to conserve wall space..........................................

    1) I am doing a quick presentation for my son's kindergarten class as part of a "what do your parent's do for a living day thing." I need some very basic (obviously) plumbing and of course heating prop ideas. I was thinking of a very basic thing I could hand out...someonething 5-6 years old could grasp and take with them on their life's journey. Its a chance to mold perceptions. Any simple sketches or ideas would be highly appreciated.

    2) I've heard that "pepper" can be thrwon down on one's lawn to deter dogs from doing their business. Is it simple black peppere, Cayenne, Red Hot? I'm sure one of you will know or have an even better product. One of my lovely neighbors ( I have my notions of whom)lets' fluuffy out each day and he visits my lawn. Mad Dog

    Thanks - The Dog

    .

for scouts the kids made copper tubing coat hangers,a couple of 90*s into a tee with caps on the ends. You could make some up or cut and ream the pieces and have the kids glue them? Try red pepper flakes(but not to many as it may burn the lawn) on the lawn or I have a 100 pound bullmastiff you could borrow.Dave

Be the Dad that the other kids remember for life. Their parents too. Set up a burner on some angle iron brackets and wire up a 110V toggle with a 1 gallon can of #2 and show them how a burner works. There is nothing like a 2600 degree retention flame to get a bunch of 5 year olds attention. The ones that don't have nightmares may grow up to be Boiler guys too. Give the teacher one of those, one eyebrow up, and one down looks with a half smile and tell her your nickname is "Mad Dog" just before you ignite it. LOL!!!!!

Just kidding!! I like the copper hanger or something they can bend and take home idea that Dave had. Sounds like something young boys would like. As for the pepper on your lawn, you would have to cover the whole yard. I mentioned to a neighbor I had like that one time that I like dogs but wasn't crazy about cleaning up after my own, let alone yours so please don't walk him on my lawn. It worked so at least I didn't have to bring it back to his yard!!!!!!!!

My Dad made a whistle out of copper pipe for me. Sorry, I lost it and don't remember how it was constructed.

    Dog pooper stoppers

Saw just the thing in Northern Mechanical Catalog. It was a pulsating water sprinkler with a motion sensor. The dog walks on to the lawn and the motion sensor turns on the sprinkler on top of it. Or I could lend you my UZI w/a couple of thousand rounds of 9mm. or the Ruger #1 in .458 Win. Mag. with a couple of boxes of 500 gr. Solids. Your Choice? Just kidding, I will get the catalog at work tomorrrow and get the sprinkler info for you. Jon

kids they are going to have a contest...to see who can bend the stuff untill it breaks...and say that there will be a Fastest time ...and the least amounts of bend contest within the contest...and there will also be a contest to see who can bend and break the most of them in the next twenty mins...that will keep them buzy as heck and have a lot of fun ..:) who knows some of them may learn to count while they are about it :)........Oh and then make a potato gun and pepper the yard with rock salt on the dogs bass end :)

    Plumbing Scout merit Badge requierments!

Get the book and use it to teach the basics of plumbing. The "goose neck and it use" and how vents work. If you take a NEW P trap and configure it such that you can hold it up to your ear, you can talk to yourself nicely. Then tell them to make sure it is not a used P trap since all they'll hear is dirty words! Kids love joke they can aquaint with!

    Keeping the dog away

A Brick contractor told me how to keep the kids out of his sand piles. He simply placed some concrete coloring on it when it was delivered. The kid's would go home dyed something aweful and their moms would forever keep them out of the sand! Now if that dog were to visit the same or nearly the same place each day, a bit of dye could be placed around the area. Fido could have red feet very nicely, and perhaps loose up his masters carpet! just an idea!

    I like your thinking Jon

Believe me...if this were 75 years ago, I'd rub the dog s--- in the owner's face and see what he wanted to do about it....if this were 100 years ago I'd blow the little varmint to Kingdom Come...and see what the owner wanted to do about it. Too many laws, too many rules, too many lawyers.....I'll get the mutt yet. I like the sprinkler idea. Mad Dog

    How about...

...asking the kids to imagine what the warmth of the sun feels like. Then tell them you're in the business of bringing the sun indoors to keep folks warm in the same way. Explain how you use old solar energy (fuel) or new solar energy (solar!) to make that warmth. Bring a heat lamp or better, a small section of warm radiant panel to let them feel the sun indoors... Now, I never said I was practical! ;~)

    Yours, Larry

ps. I believe I remember something about how anything that smells like mountain lion whiz makes deer and perhaps dogs want to be elsewhere. It's available in catalogs!

Larry,Wolverine scent will make a bear shake his head and

sneeze and run off in another direction ,dogs just flat out Know whatever smells that bad should be left alone and will avoid that corner of the property for years...*~/:) so i got to belive mountain lion scent is probably a signifigant deterent in its own rights :) I noticed in California that dogs might chase a skunk buh once given a blast they tend to realize in a hurry they have made an intolerably bad decision frickin wit them *~/:))

    payback

I like the concrete coloring idea: I once had a customer's child who insisted on taking my tools out of the toolbox. After repeatedly telling him not to, and having his father ignore me, I finally closed the cover, and took it out to the van. That's when I noticed Junior watching me, parting his Mother's nice white lace curtains with filthy, oily hands. It still brings me a smile....
Sorry Maam, I tried to tell them.

    Mutt balls and steam talk

Here are two methods from the ever useful Formulas, methods, tips and data, by Kenneth M. Swezey.

    Dog and cat repellent powder

Shake together ingredients for several minutes, then sprinkle where desired. Be careful not to inhale.

    2 oz Cayenne pepper
    3 oz Powdered mustard
    5 oz Flour

    Dog and cat repellent spray

This works on wood concrete and stone. It says to spray a concentrated solution of naphthalene moth flakes dissolved in mineral spirits or kerosene.

This all sounds like a fun chemistry project. I hope today's bugs haven't become wise to these old tricks. I've not tried these repellents.

    Good luck.

While you talk about home heating, have the kids ask you how it all works and let them tell you how they heat their home. Is it more comfortable in front of a radiator or in front of a hot air register? There is plenty to say about how great steam is, and how important studying math and English are so important to having a great career.

Could you get permission to go tour the boiler room with the kids? Or maybe you could take apart the heating unit in the classroom and show the inside. I know I would have loved that as a kid.

As props, you could hand out industry stickers (maybe your own company stickers).

Give out O-rings or some faucet related washer and explain how such an inexpensive part can be the cause for a leaky tap and gigantic waste.

Bring some closet wax seals for the kids to play with and explain where these seals are hiding in every bathroom.

Bring a steam trap and show the insides and how the bellow grows like magic in the plume of a tea kettle.

Or just bring the pepper and flour repellent powder...

Happy to share thoughts. It'll be worth it if just one or two kids show a lot of interest (in matters of steam heat), if the whole class participates, then it will have been fun. Good luck.

    Mad Dog.

5 year olds are sharper than you think. Show them what its all about, they will understand. My 3 yr. old knows daddy works on the boilers and can spot one and then tell you either "Good boiler" or "Messy boiler".

As far as your pooch problem goes I agree some people need a lesson. A comic (I forget who) once said after bringing home a new kitten and then asked the vet. "How can I keep it from scratching up my couch?" The vet said "Anytime it tries it, you must squirt it with a water pistol and it could take a week to a month" The comic thought about it and said "A week to a month? What am I suppose to do, stand vidgil by the couch all night, every night till it works? I got an idea, why not get the BB gun out and teach em RIGHT NOW". Just kiddin. I do like the idea Jon had though.
    Good luck.

Moth balls sprinkled around will some times work although we have some stupid Crows around here that pick them up and fly away with them (Ihope they eat them).

    Glad I could help

I saw a spray can of dog repellent the meter man abandoned here once. I read the label, the active ingredient is capsicum, the hot pepper.

Seems like there is nothing new under the sun.

Have fun with the school kids.

  • Try this. it will work and should impress

Too bad it's not cold in the classroom at this time of year:-(

You could pass around a few of those small chemically reactive pouches used to keep fingers & toes warm when it gets REALLY cold outside. "Warm PAK" is one brand. Easily bought at any sporting goods store. This is radiant heat in it's most simplified form and it's hard to deny the benefit of radiant warmth with one of these things in your hands. Hot Rod's wife; Ellen, did a spectacular presentation at the RPA conference in Salt Lake that used three of these simple props. She even had the pianist vouching that "this is really comfortable. It feels soooo nice My fingers move better now!!!"

    http://www.barebonesbiz.com

You could even be so bold to ask them:... if heat rises at this point ?,,, after holding the little bags of comfort I'm sure they will learn that heat does not rise.
