Dry Fired boiler

What is the safe course of action in this case? We were called to a building for a smoking unit and the tech found the boiler had ran without water in it. This is a 100mbtu steam boiler. I had him remove the electric and take the handle off the water feed valve. Obviusly this will be replaced but what are the best immediate actions
? evacuate?

We call the fire dept.,evac the bld ,turn the gas off at the meter and don't touch anything on the boiler. Gets the problem on the 911 log and, if it's in other than a single family home, gets a notice to the boiler inspector as a dry fired commercial one must be inspected before restart. We have seen boilers orange in color which If remember is over 1600 degrees F. We are concerned about bumping something with a auto feed and have it start feeding and exploding. Also, nobody is better at getting the bld evacuated than the fire dept. In this day and age the more prudent response is usually the correct one. And, sadly, the landlord promise to have it fixed sometimes goes astray.

    yep

yep...What Dale said. Very rare in Maine. Shut unit off. Get everyone out. Call fire dept. In a case like this, a water feeder that suddenly desides to feed can be real bad.
