...ever seen any good research on heat trap design and effectiveness? Years ago gravity type traps were built into electric water heaters,(never as deep as 18"). I have seen thermal scans of 4" traps that seemed to work OK, but it seems there must have been some more thorough research. I've just not seen it.

Hot water migration trap
I want to install a hot water migration trap on my DHW tank on the domestic side. I think the length should be 18 inches. Is this correct?0 -
The deeper, the better...
but 18"'s is a minimum.
