Magic Chef Furnace

Replacement chamber for the magic chef "directly from Armstrong" is a lynn wet pack. Just did one a month ago. It is a preformed wet chamber that you have to install through that tiny hole. Once inside you have to open and form the chamber. It comes presized and cut for burner hole. It is a multi firing rate furnace, .75 or .85gph.
The ones I have seen that have failed chambers, fail directly in front of the blast tube- where the flame is directed.

Al, I am looking around in
my library to see if I have anything. You might folow up with changes which Magic Chef has gone through as listed here:
MAGIC CHEF: In 1986, Magic Chef was acquired by the Maytag Co. Air conditioning division was sold to Lennox in 1988 and renamed Armstrong Air. See Johnson.
JOHNSON, AIR-EASE: Founded in 1958 by C.A. Olsen (who started Luxaire) and brother-in-law Johnson. Became part of Magic Chef in 1972. Now owned by Lennox. Air Ease brand now part of Armstrong Air division of Lennox.
You might want to contact Armstrong Air.
I will let you know if I find anything.

Al, Is that the lowboy? I've got a couple customers with those units. I will check for the manuals if you would like.

MagicChef
Yes, Ken. It's a low boy. Trying to find out if it ever have a molded combustion chamber in the firebox.this one is completely burned out with a 4" hole directly in front of the blast tube. I think the firing rate is OK at .75, but I wonder if this unit was damaged previously by water (wet Basement) and if the chamber was never replaced.
Would appreciate any info you mignt be abel to gather up. I don't do much warm air (I like wet heat), so I have little to go on with this unit.

Al, I replaced a Magic Chef...
High boy about three years ago, that had a burn thru crack in the back of the HX, opposite the burner tube. There was no chamber in this HX, and I can gaurantee that there was no flood damage that would have warranted the chamber being removed. So, the answer would be that it never had a chamber.
As far as the serial goes, I can't help you with that. If you can find an original part with a date code on it, you could figure the manufacturing date at about 6 months after that date code.0 -
Magic Chef
i have replaced many Magic Chef furnaces. Many , meaning 150-200. The reason for replacement is almost always fallen chambers which inturn will crack the heat exchanger. The original round chamber was installed before the entire furnace was welded to the base. This chamber was OEM with small welded "fingers" to hold the edges of the round chamber up. Overtime, the thin fingers give way and fall off due to the combustion heat. After the fingers fall it does not take long for the chamber to collapse and causes a mess or a crack in the heat exchanger. I am the service manager of an oil company and it is protocal for all my technicians to pull the oil burner and visually inspect the condition of the chamber on all furnaces but especially Magic Chef. Also electronic and visual inspection of the heat exchanger is performed. I do not put "wet packs" in Magic Chef furnaces because I feel that they do not provide as well of a fit as the OEM and they do not hold up for a long period of time. If money is an issue I will replace the entire heat exchanger which comes with a new chamber. Just my humble opinion.
