Question on Quality of Recent Boiler Install

Mark Hunt

The header is not piped correctly. The supply going to the system should not be coming off between the two risers coming off of the boiler.

The installation manual clearly shows how it should be done.

Question on Quality of Recent Boiler Install

I had a new Beckman IN7 steam boiler installed yesterday and have questions about the quality of the work. Someone said this is the best place to ask steam related questions. How well done are the steam pipes on this boiler? Are there any problems/issues? It doesn't look like they did it exactly as it shows in the diagram.

I have already begun a topic on the HVAC forum and they are saying the piping has been done all wrong and is extemely inefficiant. It isn't even how the manufacturer shows in the diagram.

If anyone could give me more information it would be appriciated, I am going to give some hell to the gas company about this in about an hour and a half when they call me back.

    Ouch

Yes, as Mark said, the takeoff has to come off the header at a point after the risers combine.

The way you have it will have converging sloshing and hammer, wet steam up the pipe.

I cannot tell which side is the return (there seems to be a downcomer on the right but the header pitches off to the left.

Typically the flow sequence should be, from the boiler up both risers to the header, then the take-off to the radiators, then a drop to the return (to drain the header of condensed steam) and into this drop the Hartford Loop connects 2 inches below the waterline.

If in doubt, the directions are always right.

I have taken additional pictures that better show the steam piping above:

I had my gas company come out and do the estimate. It came to $8800, including a new chimney liner which didn't have to be done. So the price is going to go down by at least $1000. I did shop around after I got the contract and people were citing $6000-$8000. But that didn't include the chimney liner.

Basically I was paying for quality and convienece, which turned out to not be the case. I am going to make sure I get some good discounts for all this trouble.
  • gettin

Gettin the discount will not make the steaming better or drier... The boiler will have to be repiped for it to works properly.... By the way make sure the gas company put the sticker on the boiler,

What sticker are you talking about?

The guy is coming out to address all my complaints (boiler not sitting on 4 feet, emergency shutoff switch on the boiler where I don't want to be during an emergency, exposed wiring, damage to my dehumidfier, improper steam piping, damage to the exterier jacket of the boiler). It really was a botched job if I have ever seen one.

    Boiler Base

That boiler base provides no structural support. Cinderblocks were meant to be stacked with the holes vertically. I personally always use solid blocks.

As far as the piping, while a neatly done job, its incorrect. The others have explained it already.

by our friend Matt "Mad Dog" Sweeney. Not sure how the image ended up so crooked......

    Company sticker

Make sure the gas company puts their company sticker on the boiler.

If anything ever happens to the boiler, your lawyer will know who to call.

The guy was just here to address my concerns. He is saying that the piping is fine and that it does not have to be as shown in the diagram, that is how they do it on all their jobs.

Is it possible that it is piped correctly?

    HO opinion

    Two points:

    1) if the piping doesn't look like what is called for on the installation diagrams, then it's not right.

    2) if the gentlemen on this web site say it's wrong, then it is wrong. These folk are the best in the country.

If that's how they do it on all their jobs, then they've done a lot of incorrect installs. Heard that one before....

    Ingorance

Ignornance: Not knowing what you do not know, is correctable.

When confronted with knowledge and experience plus evidence in the form of a manufacturer's required piping means and methods and it is ignored, that has another word: Stupidity.

You can fix ingorance. You cannot fix stupid.
