pipe fitters license

I am a licensed plumber in ma. and have been looking at alot of boiler projects around the million btu mark and i am wondering if i need a pipefitters license? I was told that anthing over a million you need a fitters license. Is a plumbers license good enough? I find these fine lines confusing and dont want to start these projects with out the proper licenses.
The other question is if the above is correct then what about a snow melt application for a large residence that is over 1 million btus does this require a fitters license.
PLEASE HELP

Careful of what you are told

The limits can be vague plumbing division will tell you one thing and pipe fitters will tell you something else.

Also if you use smaller individual boilers and tie them together with a staging control you may be able away without a fitters license.

There are some regs such as additional manual reset high limits and low water cut offs on boilers as small as 200 MBH in commercial that a plumbing inspector will pass you on but the insurance company inspector will get you on.

In MA. a fitters licence was required for 3,000,000 and up. This has been changed. I think it is 200,000 but am not sure, when I find it I will post.

A plumbing license and a plumbing inspector have no jurisdiction over boilers in MA. except for the city water connictions to the boiler and to flash tanks used on HP steam. Water heaters and indirects are covered by the plumbers. Fitters license is by The "Dept. of Public Safety" and Plumbing License by "Board of Plumbers and gas fitters".

As usual in MA. the two boards neither talk to each other or get along.

    Definite gray area

First link is boiler laws that start at 200,000 btu

Second link is Pipe fitter law starting at 700,000 btu

From what I get you have to follow the code in between if you are not licensed as a pipe fitter although I did not read more into multiple boilers under 200,000 staged together.

I think Mitch is correct. He jogged my memory. The Pipefitter licence apply's on jobs 700,000 and up. Under 700,000 anyone can do the work (install the boiler)(even unlicensed)as long as they get an oil burner tech to get the oil permit of a plumber or gas fitter to get the gas permit. The boiler rules apply to 200,000 and up regardless of who does the work.
