I had an old "Lectro truck" .. I bought a new Escalara used it for a year..sold it and bought a Powermate. I didn't like the Escalara...it creaked and groaned with a 450 lb boiler the powermate is stonger just my opinion.

    Anyone using power hand trucks?

Things like a PowerMate or Escalera?

    Anyone tried both?
  • Tried both

and started in the biz using another brand , the Lectrotruck . The Escalera is simply amazing for pulling out nasty , heavy boilers from basements . Once you get the hang , you can yank out 800 lb Dunkirks by yourself . Bringing a heavy load down is a little difficult . The stairwheels have this nub that grabs on to the stair . If you position the boiler off a little you run the chance of skipping down a step . It can get hairy if it happens with a ECT4 on a steep staircase . The handtruck itself is very light , mayby 80 lbs total .

The Powermate and Lectrotruck are very similar , they're both stair walkers . We use the Powermate now . They handle the heavy loads very well . Battery charge lasts a long time . The Powermate's drawback is the handholds - there aren't any . Well , theres a bar at the top and on the sides , but it's extremely awkward to grab onto . Plan on welding more supports if you buy one . Another drawback is the bar for the belt - it sticks out further than the width of the handtruck . Makes tight turns a pain in the **** . And the handtruck is very heavy .

    Had a

Powermate{steel} years ago. VERY heavy, ended up not bringing it on most jobs. Bought an Escalera last year, nice and light and the forks are great for loading and unloading but Ron Jr is right it has a nasty tendency to skip a step, very disconcerting the first time it happens!

I'm looking at an aluminum Powermate.

It's supposed to lift 650# up the stairs with 2 guys. That would cover anything we've run into the last several years.

I just ordered an Esclera on Friday. Got the model with the fork lift option. I hope I didn't make a mistake. :( WW

We use the Power Mate M-series (steel). No service issues at all. Reliable although a bit heavy, once you get properly trained in its' use by the factory rep, weight becomes a non-issue. Funny thing...no more back injuries since we don't "muscle" the equipment up and down the stairs. You will not be sorry with Power Mate.
