Vaporstat Remote Location

I was hoping someone would explain the advantage of mounting a vaporstat at the end of the steam supply main. Our two pipe system is in need of being repiped to accept two Groten #2 vents and lengthening the drips to lower the water line. If it is worth relocating the vaporstat, now would be a good time during this repiping. I also would like to know where in relationship to the vents should the stat be placed.
Thanks for the help! Terry

It depends... ha...
Some types of steam systems call for the vaporstat to be near the main vent. Do you know what you have for brand? The traps, the original main vents the controls and such?
But with the Gorton vents it might not matter much where you install the vaporstat. Your system is probably piped to see less than a 1/2 PSI in pressure drop. Whether you put the pressure gauge upstream or downstream, you just account for it with the adjustments (lower at the end of main location).
Where are you located? that might be a good clue too to what you have.

Thanks Christian.
I'm in Indiana with a Mouat vapor system, Mouat water seal traps, orifice plates at the radiator valves and the new Gorton vents. I have a newer(6yrs. old), but over sized boiler and was hopeful that relocating the stat might give me a little more control of the cycle time. Terry0 -
vaporstat
T,
If you want to control on and off cycles, the vaporstat needs to be on the boiler, not somewhere that will be influenced by piping-friction losses - and the almost incalcuable effects of any distance you impose, if remotely locating the vaoprstat.
The code may also suggests operating controls be installed in, or as close to, the boiler as physically possible?0 -
if you want to control
the pressure in the MAIN, you put the vaporstat at the end of the main..if you want to control the pressure exerted on a false water line, you put the control on the false water line..ask yourself what it is you want to control..and you can always have more than one..i put them at the ends of mains all the time.

The expert
There you go, you got the most expert advice from Gerry on the Mouat. I kind of thought it would be a Mouat when you first asked the question. Good for you.
Next question.
Which items in the original Mouat systems have been giving you trouble? Not one of their vents and traps has any moving parts. Mouat boilers had brilliant pressure control, and that you'll be taking care of with the vaporstat.

Nyet!
If you want to control the pressure in the MAIN, you put a GAGE there, leave the vaporstat where it belongs (as close to the boiler as practical), and THEN, adjust accordingly.
Vaporstats control boiler firing, gages verify remote location realities. Don't confuse the two.0 -
Thanks to you all for your suggestions and comments.
Where I'm really at, is trying to make the best out of an over sized boiler. I remember an article I had found early on before I was aware of this site that spoke of placing a stat at the end of the main for better economy. They suggested wiring it so it will break one leg of the thermostat and keep the pressure stat as the high limit. My thinking and or question is would this allow a longer cycle time for an over sized gas boiler. Also what other advantages (if any!) may one see. Thanks again0 -
pressure in boiler is never
the same as in the main..and a gage controls nothing..
