in that photo i did a drop headr i like them for a few reasons #1 makes it alot easier to connect your two riser out of the boiler and allows for more expansion which stresses your sections less ,it also helps keep your risers 24 inches above the water line but gives you back some distance between your header and existing supply mains when you tie it all in ,another plus is when you use both tappings out of the boiler oversize your header a little bit and do a drop header you slow down the exiting velocity of the steam from the boiler and now your getting some dry steam up and out to you mains and rads. Please remenber to do yourself a favor replace your main vents and rad vents if your system has been suffering water hammer and water spiting out of the vents it will help your systmem function better try gorton vents they rule .Also if you have older wet returns check them if there in doubt replace them if not flush and clean them well also remove the factory plugs on the water side of the boiler and install a nipple and cap for easier cleaning of the boilers water side later in it's life the same goes for wet returns try using ball valves with hose bib adapters instead of a boiler drain much easier and cleaner you can open them and brush the mud out instead of unthreading a boiler drain and making a mess .Sorry the rant so long there's alot of small things that i always do on steamers that always make it run quite and be easy to service and clean .Good luck and peace clammy

    Question for Clammy

I read one of your replies and noticed the manifold you had installed. I'm faced with having to correct the piping on my system. In planning for the pipe and fittings, my question is as follows. Do the steam lines into the manifold need to come in from the top? Why is this better than from the side or bottom? Thanks for your help.
