cleaning a wet return

If I suspect my wet return (one pipe steam) is clogged with crud, since my system keeps over filling the boiler, is this something a handy homeowner can do themselves, or is such a "flushing" better left to a pro? The wet return is only about 6" long, and has a faucet at the bottom.
