Boiler not firing up.

This morning when I woke up at 5am, the house was so warm I turned down the one thermostat I have in this 100 year old, three story house. By mid morning the house was pretty cool and when I turned up the thermostat, I could hear the "click" downstairs in the basement and assumed the boiler had lit up. An hour later, the house was still cold, and when I checked, no fire in the boiler. I took the cover off the thermostat, and checked to see the mercury was in the on position, which it was. By this time, the house was so cold (about 12 degrees outside) I called the local heating guy, but within a short time I noticed the heat was coming up and canceled the contractor. This is the first time in almost 9 years this has happened. Any idea why? I found your site today and am a novice at this, but have already educated myself a bit, and many mysteries are starting to make sense. Great website, thanks.

    Ed who ever services

your heating system, I am assuming it's oil should be able to come out and do an overall systems check. A Co. I used to work for used to do this and charge a nominal (diagnostic) fee, most people would have us do this just for piece of mind. If the tech. has time and does our trade good, he or she should be able to answer your ?'s and show you some basic homeowner do's and dont's.

OKI, here's the info I should have included. I use natural gas. It's a steam boiler. Utica, Model # PEG225AS, 225,000 BTU / Steam: 566 Square Feet / 135,800 BTU per Hour.
