New Steam Boiler holds pressure for short time

how was the replacement boiler sized? Are there main vents at the ends of the steam mains? You may be looking for more pressure than needed. More importantly than building boiler pressure, how long does it take from a normal call for heat to satisfy the thermostat?

New Steam Boiler holds pressure for short time

I just had a new Burnham IN5 140/input 115/output boiler installed 2 weeks ago. The boiler runs great and heats the house very evenly. We have a fairly large 2 Family, 3 floor house. I have drained the boiler twice and I’m going to skim it in a couple days. The boiler takes about 40-50 minutes from a warm start to create 2 pounds of steam, but drops off to 1 pound within a minute. Cycles again for about 10 and again the same thing drops off pressure within a minute. I have checked the whole house for leaks, or hissing air valves, not one at all. I have even replaced every radiator air valve with one size larger, yet no difference. I know i'm over looking something or there is something missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The replacement boiler was sized by the sq feet of steam. There is a main vent at the top floor at the end of the main, aswell as a vent on the long run in the basement that meets with the return. On the short run in the basement it is boxed off and cannot look inside to see if there is one, but i doubt that there is.
I'm not looking for more pressure than 2 pounds. The boiler can make that 2 pounds in about 40 minutes from a warm start. But once it hits 2 pounds and shuts off the boiler looses 1 pound of steam per minute. Is that normal?
Basically the boiler cycles on between 1/2 pound and 2 pounds.
when the boiler cycles on from 1/2 pound pressure it takes about 4 minutes to get up to 2 pounds. and then drops off to 1/2 pound in about 90 seconds. Is this how it should operate normally?
  • Are the pipes insulated?

If not, steam will condense quickly in them, which can cause your problem.
