Empty glass gauge

Although it was half full two weeks ago, the glass gauge on my 20 year old Peerless is empty tonight. Am I correct in assuming that I should let it cool down for several hours before adding water with the manual control? How many hours would be safe? The radiators are hot, so I assume it was just running before I got home. A review of Dan's We Got Steam book tells me that I might want to check the float chamber in the low water cut off for crud and accumulation.... anything else I should be looking for?
Thanks!
Thanks!

one pipe or too?
are your main vents working often forgotten. The water could be traped in radiators due to trap contamination.
If I CAN NOT HOLD MY HAND on the boiler I DO NOT ADD WATER till it is cool.
Sediment in the low water feeder can be removed easily with a shop vac. cool boiler, water off, filter on vac removed open valve and suck the junk out. A turkey baster can help flush the drain but be carefull of scalding only cold boiler!!
Merry Christmas
