Head--Hunters?
No I do not have any info on that . However I have employed many over the years. This is what I learned. Attitude is what your looking for. Skills can be taught! BUT only if the attitude is correct. Now comes the disclaimer, you are not at liberty to hire an attitude. Leagally it is called discrimination. So from here on this is pure CONJECTURE.
1st, by looking for a attitude, you must be willing to pay a decent opening wage. If you hire an unmarried person, remember that person will in the future, become tied to someone who you do not know. So a young married person is the best place to start. BUT a decent wage is an absolute must. Next, have a distinct(written)job description, including expectations of things the employee should bring to work each day; tools, dress, neatness, manners, Get this detailed as much as possible. This is the time to nit-pick.The more details the more likely the attitude will show up befor employment takes place. A good prospect will be humble, i.e. teachable, and will push for knowledge at or before the beginning. The prospect will drive for his own expertise, and actually try the patience of a good tech with his constant questions. Patience must be practiced by both parties. The new hire will make mistakes but usually only once. An attitude that keeps making the same mistake over and over again is useless. An attitude that learns with each mistake is progressing willingly. (Note) The trainer-tech-teacher, is also required to learn, else your training mistakes to happen. Skill can be examined before the hireing. I like the hack saw. Have it ready and apart. Have a pipe piece mounted or near by and a floor vice ready. Just ask for a simple measured cut. and stand back and watch. (Note) If you do not know the hacksaw basics, you'd better learn them! Now like being handed an handgun, training can begin here. Is it loaded? show me? how is it operated? how and when do I use it? A good greenie will be into cutting that first pipe correctly if his attitude is correct, (and your up to hacksaw speed) A nit wit will go after this project in such a fashion that you'll cringe! A measureing tape & pencil near by will also let you see how accurate this prospect is. cutting to the 1/16th of an inch and square is possible if the basics are known and followed (and or taught) at this exam time.0
