Member Posts: 17
I presently have an old double door american standard steam boiler with a tankless coil, fired with a carlin burner.I use about 800-1000 gals. of oil ayear. Would replacing it really pay off??? Replacment would be with a 3-section w/tankless,probably a smith or peerless. I've been told I'll only save 200 gals. ayear.

Steam replacemant
It depends on what you mean by pay off.
Will the fuel savings pay back the total cost of the installation in a few years?
No
Is it worth it to replace a boiler that is long past its life expectancy on your timetable rather than as an emergency?
Yes, you have the time to select a contactor who can do the best job for you at your convenience. Go to books and more and order a copy of "We got steam heat" After you read it check out the find a professional feature above books and more and select a quailified installer.
Then sit back and enjoy your system while reading the posts from people who hired knucleheads to replace their boilers.

Will the fuel savings alone pay for the cost of the new boiler in a few years.
No, they won't
Will replacing an outdated boiler on your schedule rather than as an emergency pay off?
Yes, it will.
Check the toolbar on the left of the screen, go to books and more and get a copy of "We got steam heat" Read it through, then use the find a pro feature in the same toolbar to locate contractors in your area.
After the work is done, sit back and enjoy the heat. You can pass the time by reading posts from people who "waited for it to go" and hired knuckleheads to replace their boiler.

Are u getting enough hot water out of it? If you are just make sure that your saftey controls are working like your low water cuttof and you should be ok. 200 gallons a year though is over 400 bucks right now though. So a 4000.00 replacement would take ten years to pay for itself0 -

Probably not.

Yes
Check the tool bar on the left, go to books and more and order a copy of "we got steam heat". After you have read it go to the Find a Professional tab and find a list of contractors in your area. Tell them where you found them and make sure they know steam heat.
After you have had the new unit installed, sit back and enjoy a quiet, well balanced heating system.
You can pass the time reading posts on the wall from people who "waited until it goes" and hired the first knucklehead who could get there. They will be looking for advice about high fuel bills, noise, spitting vents, and not enough heat.
Good luck and keep us posted.
