What is this?

See the attached photo. This is coming off of one of my steam mains (one pipe system). It is about 6 feet from the boiler on a main that is 50 feet long in total. It is before any takeoffs/risers to radiators. It seems to serve no purpose. Any ideas?

Without a handle

I didn't realize mains could have valves. Is the purpose simply to close the main? Can/should I get rid of it?0 -
Why?
Does it leak? What is the problem. EJW0 -
i think it was the only thing handy..They needed a coupling

Its a valve
perhaps to close during warm periods when the occupants needed lots of very hot domestic water, and steam otherwise would get to the rads?? Expensive coupling, even without the handle.0 -
It doesnt leak, it just gets very hot. I guess I can just wrap it in insulation, right? I have been holding off since I didn't know what it was. Thanks for the help!0
