Strange Pressure Control Location

I'me in the process of tuning my steam system and discovering some strange things that may or may not need addressing. One is the location of the Pressure COntroller and how it is installed.

Mine is attached directly to the low water cut-off, and by a short straight pipe. Shouldn't it be attached to one of the boiler pipes, and with a pig-tail? Or is this installation acceptable?

I also noticed that the main pressure ring was set to 8 lbs, and the diff ring to 0. The system has worked for 20 years, but occasionally blows steam from the safety valve.
