    Unico Heat

Has anyone had a problem with Unico heating coils?? Our old salesman sold two systems to a woman he referred to as the ICE QUEEN. He quit to work for Webb and left us holding the bag. It should be in court by the end of the year. Any advise??

Since Unico must be engineered for the cooling load, your heating ability is quite limited. In cooler climates were heating requirements are much greater than cooling, supplemental heat is required. "Rule of Thumb" I've heard is that supplemental heat is generally required North of the Mason-Dixon line.

Am using a heat pump with mine only for shoulder seasons or cold snaps when the only real heating requirement is to remove the early morning chill.

    Sorry Mike

but I disagree, we have some running that handle the heat load just fine !

Sounds to me like a design issiue. Contact Unico, they would like to see thier systems running proporly.

    i agree

the unico systems run well if there designed for heating , check the design load and the flow rate to the coil and water temp the outlets should put out about 2000 btus and 160 F water temp

Scott: You're correct. That statement was based on an older technical bulletin. Just downloaded the new heating info and their newer hot water heating modules have quite significant output--particularly with high supply water temps.

Unico does however still say, "Do not oversize the cooling more than ½ ton if heating capacity is insufficient." They also stress than slight undersizing of the cooling system is preferable to oversizing as it leads to better comfort.

Will still suggest than in climates where the A/C load is relatively low compared to heating that you'll have problems if the A/C component is properly sized.

    I would recommend

a chiller system for the northeast. Dump the DX. Much more forgiving and flexible WRT cooling. I'm by no means an expert in cooling systems, but am learning quickly. In my opinion, after seeing a Heat/Cool chiller system go through the birthing process( not a switch over system, but independent 4-pipe with CWC and HWC), watch your TOTAL CFM'S per system, and size for the heating load. Outlets/Ton ratio may not be according to the book. Watch the SP.

p.s. Oh, and I am beginning to fully appreciate the ultimate wisdom of Geoff and the importance of the envelope
    at this critical juncture.
