Radiator question

Some of the steam radiators in my house have a panel behind them applied to the wall that seems to made of some sort of metalic foil. What is this and is it of any use?

I would guess that is there to reflect heat into the room. Is the radiator in an enclosure? Maybe they covered the radiators at one time and thought that would help.0 -
It's a reflector
which is supposed to reflect heat back into the room instead of letting it go thru the wall. That's on my list of things to try during the next heating season to see how well it works.

What about an aluminum flashing type of material?0 -
That might work too
as long as it's shiny enough to reflect, and removable for cleaning.
