I spent this afternoon sharing our occupation with 8th graders on their career day.
What a great chance to share with the future of our industry.
It's a amazing how kids you never have met before hear what your saying better than your own kids do.
The kids seemed to enjoy it. I'm not sure who had a better time, me or them.

Keith,
See the post that Scott Milne left a week and a 1/2 ago.
He felt the same thing AND some promise for the future.Chris0 -
kids
did the same thing in the AM yesterday. My nephew, who is a parttime and budding steamhead with me summers and vacations, is a guidance councelor at a middle school. I just did my second career day for him and "his kids". How neat it was to show off what we do and it is really a great feeling to "see the light come on" in some of those kids. talking to 50-60 kids, some of who are there just to get out of others classes, can be challenging to say the least (how do teachers do it???), but getting one or two to show real interest and ask intellegent questions can really make your day. And to listen to my nephew talk about his experiences in the trade and to see the excitement he show when talking about it, well, that's just icing on the cake. Get out there and share what you know and do....you never know who's listening.....or what seed you may plant...it doesn't get any better that that!!!0 -
nice experience
If you haven't asked the kids about what they envision when they hear the word plumber, ask them. It's a real treat.
What do you think they told me? Butt Crack.
Is it any wonder we have trouble filling the need for new recruits?
It gives you the opportunity to dispel the myth and have some laughs at the same time.
Good stuff,

Kieth!
You must have done a good job. I have come toward plumbing from HVAC because of my interest in radiant floors and boilers. I think it's one of the coolest trades a person can be in. It's challenging mentally as well as physically. I wish I knew more about it than I do. (but I'm learning all the time) I teach a night class for ACCA every Fall about Hydronics, which in my area is the ugly step child in HVAC. Most of the sytems around here a Scorched air. (not that there's anything wrong with that...:)yeah right) When I show the guys pictures of the modern hydronics that I'm doing their mouths drop open. I had Dan Foley in last Fall and when he showed them what he's doing their jaws hit the floor. The general perception of the trade has little to do with the reality. Thanks for taking the time to show the kids the truth. WW

Timing is everything
As luck would have it there was an article in Snips Magazine this month about jobs being outsourced.
I think the article did a nice job of driving the point home that our occupation offers a lot of opportunities and can't be done overseas.
Even at 13 years old they seemed to be able to grasp the concept of empoyment stability and the ability to afford the things you want out of life. Of course I talked about this in the sense of money for girls, spring break and beer(that may of helped).
