Installing new Cast Iron Raditors
Andrew Fredricks
Member Posts: 1
I moved into a 1856 gothic farm house with poorly installed seral base board hot water heating. I would like to up grade to cast iron raditors and deverter tee system. Governale appears to have nice radiators and the plumer says if I can get the raditors he would hook them up. But I am having a hard time finding a place to purches raditors. Also difficulties figuring out the size of radiators I need. I am looking for sugestions how to go about this process.
Thank you

GOVERNALE
Ask your plumber to contact the local supply house. Most wholesalers I know sell Governale. The wholesaler can arrange a meeting between you, your plumber and the Governale rep..0 -
There is nothing wrong with using salvaged radiators. You might have more of a selection and even save some money. Ask around on this site for anyone who has them. Check eBay, there all lots of them there.

mono flo divertor tee system is poor choice. go two pipe system and find a plumber who knows how to measure radiation. burnham makes radiators and they might be your best choice.0 -
I have a one-pipe
(mono-flo), all copper, multi-zoned system in my home, wouldn't have anything else. Best investment I ever spent time on, JMO!
Here's another source for rads:

Could we have a moment of silence please
To honor a person who's heart shines with the pure spirit of hot water heat. My hat is off to you sir for pursuing your chosen path toward hydronic nirvana.
Wow! new cast iron rads.
Three cheers all together now!!0 -
Andy, before you buy your radiators
you need to determine how much heat each room needs. Don't assume the previous installer did a heat-loss calculation. Click on "Free Heat Loss Calcs" at the top left of this page for more info.
If your house lacks proper insulation, storm windows etc. now is a good time to upgrade these items. If you do this, you can use smaller radiators, and a smaller boiler when it comes time to replace that.
A diverter-tee system will work well if properly designed. But I'd still use two-pipe, since the use of Thermostatic Radiator Valves (another recommended upgrade) on a diverter-tee loop can upset circulation in the rest of the loop.
