REMOVING PAINT FROM CAST-IRON RADS?

Janis King

I have a 104 year old house and want to remove the paint from the beautiful decorative rads. Have used circa 1850 but it doesn't seem to do much except fuse the paint more to the rad. Any suggestions?

    radiator

Find a place that will dip it into a solution, theres a place in somerville mass that pumps these babies(old painted radiators) out by the hundreds, can't remember the name.

    Sandblast

I have had excellent results with getting cast iron radiators sandblasted. Biggest problem was getting them to and from the sandblaster.

    Remember...

There's probably lead paint on them thar radiators...

    Proceed with caution.

    sandblast

Sandblasting is what we had done to our radiators. Powdercoating was the first choice to refinish them but do to the unavailibility of a powdercoater able to handle large heavy cast iron items within a reasonable distance of us we repainted them with high temp engine enamel.

Pressure washer with zero-degree nozzle works great for me. Usually takes it down to the original bronzing.
