Boiler Asbestos Removal Costs

Steve Garson
Steve Garson Member Posts: 191
I am obtaining bids to remove the 1-1/2 inch corrugated asbestos board that exists between the cast iron boiler and the sheet metal exterior of my old steam boiler. I received my first quote of $1200. There is no other asbestos in my house since the pipes were done years ago.

I hate to waste people's time on bidding unless I feel that there a better prices to be had.

Do any of you have a sense of what a reasonable price for this job should be with a legal contractor?

Thanks

    Get three bids...

and go with the one with the most detail. Remember, these people have your health and your familys health in their hands, and you have no way of know for sure if they are taking precautions to protect you.

The lowest bid is not always the best.

    Asbestos removal

Are you doing this to replace boiler or just because it's there. If for removal, make sure they clean the grout between sections of cast iron, clean out fibrous material from fire pot even though most of the co.s will say that it does not look like asbests, you can't tell unless you test every bit inside, invariably there is mortar or something w/ asbestos in it. Also clean around flue pipe to chimney connection, again a spot where asbestos containing like plaster was used to seal in flue. Good luck.

I had this done recently to my boiler for the purpose of replacing the boiler. I needed to remove all of the asbestos on the boiler plus about 10 linear feet from the near-boiler piping. The first quote was for $1200 (from a company hooked up with the boiler installer). I got several other quotes and ultimately went with a more reasonable quote for $730. Good luck

Thanks for the insights. I wouldn't have thought about the cemend holding the flue pipe to the wall nor possible asbestos gaskets or interior insulation. It sounds like the boiler needs to be dismantled to do the job 100%.

    Asbestos

I would have a sample tested. I was told I had asbestos around my old boiler and that it would cost about 1,200 to have it removed before they could remove the old boiler. I was told that they were 90% sure it was asbestos. I sent a sample to a local analyis lab and in 2 days for $25 I had the analysis results. It was not asbestos but fiberglass and cellulose. It saved me a bundle. Look in the yellow pages--the lab I used was Niche analysis.

    asbestos

I don't want to make light of asbestos but.........if you don't disturb it it won't hurt you. If you have an older house you could have it in basement floor tile, other mortor in and around your home, etc. You could have lead paint on your walls. Point is it might be harmful if you breath, eat, or smoke it. My Dad worked as a steamfitter for about 10 years when he was young. He used to crawl around steam tunnels, knock off the asbestos, fix the pipe then mix a new batch asbestos laden insulation and slap it back on. He's 84 and has no health problems related to asbestos. Just my personal experience. I think fiberglass insulation might be the next "asbestos" someday. Point is don't get silly.
