attic exp tank

I have another thread going on this...(leak?)...but am down to one question, I believe.

I found a pipe comming off the return on the old pipes heading to the giant old expansion tank in the attic, which has been abandoned by cutting it off and capping it in the attic, leaving the pipe up from the boiler in place. Should this be a valve to bleed rather than a cap? I have today off to deal with it and give it the Rockey knockout punch.

Thanks for everything,

Tim

    Better recommendation...

If you can cut it off down low in the basement, you don't have to deal with it at all. If not, then yes, you need to bleed the air out, but it will occur everytime you drain the system, and will also trap any free air floating around the system. It should be completely eliminated at the point that it connects to the bottom of the system.

    As usual,

ME is on the money. Elimate the pipe as close to the basement system piping as possible or

    install a bleed/vent on it.
