Drop header needed?

that header is the steam drum and companion running nipples that comes with the boiler. looks like you are missing the equalizer though. get factory piping layout on that model. steam drum is good.

I have been working on this system that I have for awhile, it is a large one pipe steam system with a 1.5+ mil. BTU HB Smith boiler, It has approx. 280' of 8" mains around the inside perimeter of the building.

I have installed 8 gorton #2's and replaced the rad. vents with assorted larger Gortons, I can still hear the air whistle out of the vents when it comes up on steam, and the pressure is at 1.5# cut out.

The next thing I am looking at changing is the header I don't know if this will help, but the water line is just 14" below the header, so I know I am getting wet steam. I have attached pictures of the boiler to show the current header.
    Thanks,
    Phillip

Phillip, I cant tell by the pict. but it looks like your returns are mounted very high. If the radiator drips go into a dry return with out any water seal the steam can back up through the return and shut off your main vents before the air is completely out of the main. The main can still be full to trapped air that must be vented thru the radiator vents. Check the return piping. All the drips must go back into the main or into a wet return. I'm not a pro just going through this with my system. Best of luck, hope this helps.

It is hard to tell in this picture, but the 2 returns drop into 2 hartford loops then into the boiler, and the equalizer is piped right next to where the hartford loops go into the boiler.
    Thanks
    Phillip
