how important is it to have one of those spin on car type oil filters on a reillo? are the pumps that suseptable to water or other contaminants?

Micro Filter
It's good practice for any burner. The nozzles have been getting smaller due to tighter house construction and proper boiler sizing. Smaller tolerence comes with smaller nozzles so you need cleaner oil.
True a Riello will shut down on safety before other burners due to a bad nozzle. But I look at that as a good thing. No problem with Riello pumps but it's not a good thing to have the oil shut-off stick open...... Fuuuurrr-booooomm

Been having trouble with Carlins too lately with small nozzles. .60 is a killer0 -
Riello has recommended
two filters since 1980, FACT!
IMO three is even better.
Sludge-pot at the tank, then a spin-on and when you get to the pump a line filter. That can be anything as far as I'm concerned.0 -
It's an easy sell
You just have to explain what firedragon mentioned, and that is the Riello wants one. After all if it saves a midnight call out it pays for itself. Plus, the spin-ons seem to help keep the pump stainers from fouling too. They can handle a lot of gallons, so check to see with the customer on how much they use per year. You may only need to change the pre-filter on an annual basis and the spin-on every other.

water?
If you have water in the fuel not even a Garber will keep it out of the pump (and nozzle). Nothing I know of will. That being said, I agree with the dragon. The better the filter the less problems you'll see. With one addendum: get the flow rate down to the firing rate first. That means lose that return line if you have one. There was an error rendering this rich post.

Riellos & Filters
I've been using spin-ons (mounted near the burner) for a long time. The Firedragon is correct about multiple filters for Riello; I think he wrote the Riello book. The best rig I ever saw was a set of wall-mounted Racor marine diesel engine filters in tandem. The first was a glass bowl water separator (with drain), the second was a filter can with your choice of elements (I think they go down to below 10 microns). The filter can top also had a vacuum gauge on it. It was amazing to see the amount of water and also black stuff in the #2fuel (new tank and fresh fuel). The owner changes filters as needed (several times a year). He's never had a plugged nozzle, and the combustion residue is never black soot; more like greyish ash.0 -
Filters
The spin on filter is a must with any burner.0 -
If you use a
vacuum gauge on the spin on you only need to change it when it needs to be changed instead of guessing. The filters are expensive enough it makes the gauge a good investment and a nice selling point to the client.0 -
i like what you are all saying ..let me interject an observation
14 years ago or so to date i pulled some model H,J and websters out of a barrel that had been sitting in one place for years maybe15 or so..some had plugs in them some not they were subjeted to freezing oxidation and swimming for quite some time...i pulled ten of them apart and cleaned them up a bit and cranked them up and vroom...going concernes...no flutter no sputter...not all that i cleaned worked however i think the ability of these newer pumps maybe a little more robust than one would be led to belive...maybe some day i will try to test the limits on the riellos through a large nozzel at 100 psi i think that the riello will be a survivor i will send some ice its way as well as water....maybe next winter when i am deliberating climbing the walls or bidding on some buzy work0 -

Vacuum gauge is the way to go. I had a guy I did a tune up for that was pulling oil out of his tank for his tractor and said it looked dirty. He found a supply house that was selling him spin ons for big money and he was changing them every 2-3 weeks. He wanted me to sell him some off my truck and I talked him into letting me put a guage on for him. Last I talked with him it had been four months and he hadn't changed the filter.
