using bleach as drain cleaner?

But bleach wont do much. It will sanitize and deoderize but it wont clean much. Take a piece of pipe fresh off the pipe macine and swish it around in bleach, you got to work to get the oil off it. It wont do much for your drains.

A better idea is one of those enzime build up removers, use it regularly. The one i use is made by zep, i'm sure others are good too.

Bleach is bad for your septic system, if you have one.

    this a plumbing question, but i figure you guys are plumbers too

    Whats your opinion of pouring a cup of bleach down your drains once a month for maintenace purposes?

    Was told it helps prevent buildups (hair and whatnot) from occuring and is safe for all pipes.. Hate to use draino

    Don't do it

    Bleach and organic materials make for some nasty gas.
  • drains

    try a pot of boiling water and some liquid soap.. pour liquid soap in the drain and follow it with boiling water.. if not, get a plumber with a snake and experience..

    Bio-Clean

    Find a plumbing contractor that will sell you some Bio-Clean for regular maintenance cleaning.

    Some guy died doing that

    Wasn't there a post here within past couple of months where they found a guy dead on his bathroom floor after using assorted household chemicals to try to unplug a drain? It would certainly be dangerous to mix chlorine bleach (acid) and Draino (sodium hydroxide). Not sure how ammonia added to that mix would react.

    When my bathroom sink was backing up into my bathtub, I could not get any liquid or gel drain cleaners to clear it. But after rinsing it a few times to clear that out (which still drained slowly), Spic'N Span powder and a teapot of boiling water got it flowing.
