Butcher Job

Today I looked at a WM Gold CGI that has 2 zones of BB, a 35 gallon indirect and radiant in the basement and garage. I don't know the lengths of the tubing runs but there are 2 runs going out to the garage and 4 coming out of the floor in the basement. I am asuming 1200 ft. of tubing total. The system has zone valves on the feed and the circ is on the feed. The monkey who installed it remotely mounted a 007 on the wall where the tubing enters the basement and spiced the wires into the wires of the boiler circ. He feeds both garage and basement with this. The zone valve for the basement is wired to the system but the garage one is not. He left the garage zone valve open so every time any zone calls this hot wired 007 runs and dumps heat in the garage. This is all piped direct no p/s. The boiler must have run for 2 hours and never went past 120 degrees. It was running when I left. Will p/s piping work on such a small water content boiler? I am replacing his 35 gallon indirect for a larger unit could I use the 35 for the radiant zones and p/s the near boiler piping? If someone will tell me how to I can post pics tomorrow. Thanks, EJW

    I think

You'd about HAVE to use P/S. You need to mix down the radiant supply temps and increase your boiler temp and P/S is pretty much the best and easiest way to do it.

    Temp

Theres a Sparco mixer on the radiant but not a temp gauge any where except the tridicator. The boiler limit is at 180. EJW

    how

can a Sparco mixer NOT be connected P/S ? and still work ?

Sounds like a repipe job to me. Maybe a Taco RMB ? I used one for a similar sounding re-do and it works well.

Have you ever posted pictures here? I never have, it would make this alot easier to explain. Someone please tell me how. Sorry ,EJW

    Yes

If you have them saved in your computer, click the attachments tab and add them there. I can do it, but have trouble explaining how :) Play with it and you'll figure it out. I've attached some of my RMB job's pics.

Click "Browse" to get into your files to get a pic and select one to the window, then click "Add". When it's done adding all the ones you want to post, click "OK" and you're ready to post them with your message. (I guess I can explain it after all).

    pic's

When you go to reply, click on attachments at the bottom. When the window open's click browse, Go to either "desktop" or "my pictures" and choose the picture you want to add. You can add multiple pic's this way also..;) hope this helps..BTW once you start on that repipe job remember you own it. If the radiant is that messed up you may want something in writing to CYA..;)

    One fixed

Here is one job we found. Thankfully, the idiot that was installing this, took off with the money and never came back, so the boiler was spared. Idealy, I would have re-piped everything, but they were just taken for a few thousand and they had to work lots of overtime to have use fix it. Its running like a champ now. And we also had to ripe out all of the pex, and add a panel rad and a towel rad to make up the supplemental BTUs.

Below are the before and after pics.

Oh and something else, the feed on that manual 3 way was right from the domestic cold water.

The owners are great and I am happy to have helped them.

Yes it is. Funny story is, when the original "radiant" contractor started his work, he must have snapped the line. So when he left that day, there was no heat. He was called back and couldnt fix it. So the owners call their oil guy who found the problem.

    indirect

Since you have a good but too small indirect my solution would be to use that as your radiant seperation. pump your boiler through the indirect coil and add the volume of the tank to the radiant side. You can make the radiant weather responsive by adding a simple 256 Tekmar to the tank in place of it's standard aquastat. it's a heck of alot simpler than building a pri/sec system and you can recycle some components they have already payed for. You've got to make sure your tank coil is big enough, but I've found it almost always is. Tekmar works like a charm on the tank

    Indirect coil

How do I determine if this coil is big enough if I dont know how much tubing is in the concrete? I can't imagine this not working though after seeing what they have been living with. Anyone have any thoughts? EJW

Have you used an indirect in the manner I describe above? If so what were the results? Thanks, EJW

It's not a hyper link. You just have to high light it, right click, copy and paste to a new window.
