Talked to a Trade School last night

named Gary Paul from Salem Plumbing Supply, asked me to come along last night while he did a presentation to a trade school. Actaully it was a night class with mostly students, apprentice's getting hours for thier journymans and a few getting hours for the Masters test.

After Gary's talk he asked me to speak about being in the trades and work experience. They had to pull the microphone away from me :). What a good feeling, these guys sat and listened and ask some good questions. I spoke about changes in our trade with the advances in heating. I told them to Learn Their Math. Controls will be what seprates some from the others. The next five years will bring rapid changes for our trades and they should be prepared.

After the talk about fifteen or so came up to talk adn ask more questions. One young man shook my hand and told me its was the best speach they've had all year.

I walked away so pumped I could'nt get to sleep for a few hours last night.

Thanks to Gary for a chance to speak to these guys.

Scott

    That is good to hear!!

You were a good pick to speak to the young lads. The days of the guy with the butt crack hanging out are over and these guys need to know that. The heating world is taking a high tech turn for the better. The guys who just "hook pipes up" will be weeded out. I did not know your other hat was " ambassador". Good for you Bud.

    Way ta Go Scott *~/:)

The young guys at the union well ,..they like to hear what you are saying dont forget to run by them the opportunities in the future and drop by to check out some of thier work ....and chirp it up ..heres why the guys then get the same feeling except it is magnified in them and it hangs with them as "T h e D a y Scott M i l n e" stopped by to thier job:) Trust me :) The young guys really like hearing that they are doing something right for a change :) what really must make your day is that you could beat them with a stick while talking to them and they would stay right there and still thank you :) in thier eyes it was Worth It! kinda like a gung fu teacher's , students :)Way to build the community Scott! two points for you *~/:)

    Giving Back

    Nice job Scott!!

I too get carried a way when speaking from the heart. It's easy when you believe in what you are doing.

Next week I have the opportunity to speak with some 8th graders about the trades.

Now it's my turn to give back.

Would it be appropriate to bring up the subject of marriage? :)

    Well done Scott,

do that a lot myself and nothing pumps me up more than talking to the future.

Just an FYI for everyone, if you are speaking to a Vocational School and they teach oilheat please feel free to offer a complete set of our books to the library.

Just have the school send us a request on letterhead and all of our books are on the way for zip. It's our way of paying forward.

    VERY nice gesture Firedragon!

After hearing the horror stories of the text these students are getting, that will be a BIG kick in the pants.

Great job Boss! I know how hard it is to shut you up, but these guys appreciated it. Maybe we found our fountain of youth? Chris

    Great Job Scott!

Congradulations! This could be the begining of a whole new spin on your career. It was for me. I did a talk on the trades for my local BOCES (career day) Now I am teaching the NORA oilheat I&II class for adult Ed. It is the greatest feeling after 25+ years in the business, passing on to others all the things I have learned from all the schools I attended. Not to mention the stuff that is not in the textbooks, that the "deadmen" passed on to me!
belive me the pay isn't gonna make you rich but the rewards are GREAT!
Welcome to the world of education in a field we all love.
Who knows? maybe you've found a new nich?

    Al
  • Scott it is good to see

you guys are following through on what you talked about at the meeting I attended. Keep up the good work. If you need someone from the education side of the business I will come and speak for nothing anytime as I love to get young guys fired up about this business..

    You da' man Scotty

But didn't the audience snicker at the Lobsta bib you forgot to take off after dinner???

Hey, another shameless plug: Catch The News next week. I did a few stories on how the folks in Grand Forks, ND keep their kids at home and interested in the trades. (Lobster is not an enticement up there.)

half the room if I had the work.

Right now with a crew of nine I need to confirm the work load before growing.
