insulate
A recirculation system works great. The most important
thing is to insulate the hot water and return lines. I also use pump with a built in timer and aquastat. This insures the pump is not running all the time. I think this combination does not take away from eff.
On large homes I think it is more eff. not to have to let the water run for 30 seconds to get hot.
