Started up our first GB 142 today

I will post some pics soon. I think this is quieter than our last Vitodens we installed. The condensate trickling down to the condensate pump made more noise than the heater running. You can do some neat things on the control side also. We can derate the boiler, point by percentage point, on the heating side through the controller. So if you have a large domestic water need you can fire the boiler to max, but if your heating load is not as big, you can fire the boiler down as low as 30% of max input. This is a very cool piece of equipment. We are very excited about it.

Darin,
If I were the customer, could I get a rebate on the 70% I don't need?(G)
I like to hear enthusiasm, and pleasure of accomplishment.
It must be a nice job, eh?

I can say this.
When we fired the boiler with THE COVER OFF, it was already quieter than anything I have heard to date, even the Viessmann. I know that is hard to believe because the Viessmann is a VERY quiet boiler. But the GB142 is quieter.
As Darin mentioned, you can hear the condensate trickling down the drain.
Being able to de-rate the boiler on the heat side while keeping the full fire capacity for the domestic side is a stroke of genius. This home has a HUGE domestic requirement with a relatively small heating load. Because we can de-rate the boiler no buffer tank is necessary.
Darin and I actually fired the boiler at about 3:00 pm today, but we stayed and watched it until about 5:30.
Modulating/condensing stuff just amazes me. After all those years with straight fire equipment, watching something that has a "heart beat" is just a thrill.
Can't wait to get back on the job tomorrow. We'll get to FEEL the difference!!!
I really love doing this stuff, especially now. SO many good things happening!!

Mark what did
you get for a combustion analysis on this unit? I am very interested in this boiler. I am trying to get up to Buderus to see one soon.0 -
Well, get up here Tim
Dont take their word for it. Come see for yourself. This is some exciting stuff. Guess you can tell I work here.lol0 -
Nice to know.....
Mark,
Glad to see someone installing some quality in my old neighborhood. Cant wait to see the pics. What will we come up with next? (wink).0 -
GB results
We were running 4 ppm on low fire and around 30 ppm on highfire.(without an adujustment, right out of the box) With the three speed pump we were able to adjust the delta t to around 30F. We are only running a patial load at this point and set the high limit on 120. It is maintaining 117F in the boiler without shutting down the burner. The flue temp was around 96F. I don't have to tell what the eff was.0 -
how about
a extra tapping so we can keep the gauge when we install a Ecomatic ???

Thanks for stopping by Steve!
It was fun watching the numbers change as fast as we changed settings.
This is going to be a fun boiler to play with.
Thanks again!

Pics will come soon
I do have a few that were taken yesterday, but there are so many wires and pipes in the way that the pics do not really do justice to the job.
We'll have some finished photos next week.

It is still hard to believe how quiet it is!!
This boiler purrs like a kitten. In true Buderus fashion, a high quality piece of equipment. Thanks again to Steve Grady for stopping by, checking our work out, and giving a official Buderus start up.

Your Welcome
I truly enjoy when I see contractors that have passion for their work.
You guys did an excellent job and it is always a pleasure to work with you.

tell us more about the system
I am curious about the rest of the system. What are the emitters? How big of a building? How long did it actually take to install this and get it running? And any more first impressions? Inquiring homeowners want to know.
Larry (from OSHA)0 -
Hi Larry
The GB142 will be used primarily for seven areas of floor warming. There are two slab radiant zones and the ST-200 indirect will provide hot water for the home.
I do not need all of the capacity of the boiler for floor warming and the slab areas so we will derate the boiler for heating and yet it will go to full fire when there is a call for domestic hot water.
The building itself is about 6400 sqft. We have floor warming zones in the 4 bathrooms on the second floor, floor warming zones in the Library, Sunroom, Kitchen and a dog room. The basement and the garage will be heated with the floor system.
We were contracted to do the plumbing and radiant work. Yesterday made three weeks total on the job and all of the DWV plastic is complete as is the AquaPex water distribution. All of the tubing is up for the floor warming and the boiler is running as we speak. We actually hung the boiler on Monday and fired it Thursday. Our pump panels take a bit of time and it took me a day to wire it all.
I haven't had time to really sit down and play with it yet, but I am very impressed with what I have seen so far. Darin and I hung around for about 2 hours yesterday after we fired it which was around 3:00. I was sitting in front of the boiler and I realized that I could hear the condensate trickling out of the boiler yet I could not hear the boiler running.
Steve Grady from Buderus stopped by today and we messed around some with the pump speed on the primary and we watched the delta T react. CO numbers were very low. 7ppm in low fire and about 30ppm when it ramped up to full fire. No adjustments were necessary.
Did I mention how quiet it is?
As I learn more about it, I'll keep you posted.

Larry - Thanks for asking
The house is roughly about 6500sq ft. It primarily heated and cooled by forced air. We are doing floor warming throughout certain areas of the home, and every bathroom. We are using, dare I say it after the other thread running here, onyx stapled up. These zones will have floor sensors controlling the floor temps. The basement and garage slabs are actually radiantly heated with pex. These will have Wirsbo radiant tstats controlling them. All the floor joists are TGI's so it made it easy in alot of places to have the knockouts already there, you just tapped them out with a hammer.
We also did the plumbing there. I ran out copper mains and then ran pex to all the bathroom and kitchen groups. It went very fast. We have a very fast system doing all of our pvc drainage. Mark goes through and "marks" all the holes to be drilled. I come right behind him with the hole hawg and drill every hole we need. Then the drill is put away. Then the chop saw is brought in. We use a rolling scaffold, one guy gets on that and stays there. The other guys cuts everything and runs for everything. The house has six bathroom groups, including a walk-in shower in the masterbath and a giant cast iron whirlpool tub, laundry center, kitchen and a half. We walked through the drainage rough start to finish in two 8hour days.
The biggest problem on that job site now is that by eight o'clock in the morning with the sun shining the site turns into a huge mud pit ready to swallow you up. One trip out to the truck turns your boots into 10 pound weights.
It is always a feeling of great satisfaction to have everyone become spellbound staring at the pump panels for our heating systems.

Now we have to
make them take their shoes off before they enter the boiler room!
Here's a pic of the house.

HEY Mark!!!
I Looked at this post over and over and the only picture I can find is a house in a mud hole.
Do we have to subscribe to something to get the rest of them??
al0 -
I'm putting in my second GB right now. It's an electric baseboard to panel rad/ runtal baseboard conversion w/ viega pex and TRV's. It's gonna be a SWEET setup when it's done. Finally get to start piping the boiler tomorow after three days of fishing pex across finished ceilings and hanging 16 panel radiators.0 -
Ray
These are such a nice unit. I am sure you will be very happy with it. I have a strong feeling that when you leave the job the only time you will be going back is to do a annual service on it. Make sure you post some pics, Sounds like you got a good thing going there.
