Jamestown NY Heat Exchanger Installation

Here are some pictures taken by John Short of Ahlstrom-Schaeffer of a pair of shell & coil heat exchangers that we supplied. These HXs were recently installed at the City Hall in Jamestown NY, replacing a plate & frame leaker. John spearheaded the project & did the bulk of the design, and Chautauqua Mechanical did a nice job on the installation. A 350 GPM building loop split between two units, supplying just under 3,500,000 BTU/hr total off the district hot water system. We were able to pull the shell & coil HXs right off the shelf, out of the manufacturer's (Advanced Industrial Components - formerly SECESPOL) warehouse in Toronto.

    Nice welding

Nice pipefitting too, did you have to do any stainless welds in the field? also what is the temp of the district hot water?

    The Stainless...

... welding on the HX's proper is all done at the factory in Europe. Our involvement was sizing the HX's (we're reps for the manufacturer) and working with John on some of the design. The local contractor's (Chautauqua) guys built the stand, and did all of the field fitting & welding.

The design inlet temp from the distict heating system is 250*F, and they're looking for 162*F return. This keeps their pumping costs down, because with a bigger delta-T, they'd have to move more GPM - and of course that means more horsepower to make it happen, bigger piping, etc.

    The Above SHOULD Say...

... "because with a SMALLER delta-T, they'd have to move more GPM..." I can't edit the post, because I'm on a different computer.
