Interesting website......

I've been digging into the properties of various types of Stainless steels due to how much of it we run into. All types of heat exchangers, vent materials and tubing have numbers like 304, 316Ti, 308 etc. and I just got to wondering what the heck they mean and what difference does it make. So I looked on Google and found this site.

Look under the products heading, select the grade you want to investigate and then click on the technical bluesheet in the upper right corners of the page.

Enjoy!

    Good find Steve

This was under the Q&A section refering to stainless free iron surface contamination, for example. Maybe something to do with stainless boiler HXers?

How about that stainless car, at their site!

"Again, this is a complex question with many issues to be considered. Briefly, stainless steels obtain their corrosion resistance from the existence of a thin passive film of chromium oxides or chromium hydroxides on the surface. Anything which inhibits the formation of this film is detrimental to the corrosion resistance of a stainless alloy. One such condition is the presence of "free-iron" on the surface. Embedded non-stainless steels (from tooling, handling equipment, etc.) on the surface can rust, causing surface staining. If the stainless steel is being used under corrosion conditions (chloride concentration, temperature, pH, etc.) near the limits for the alloy, such surface free-iron contamination may promote corrosion attack. Removal of the free iron by "passivation" in dilute nitric acid is frequently used to prevent such problems. Other forms of surface contamination may require more aggressive treatment by pickling, typically with nitric plus hydrofluoric acid mixtures."

    Anyone have info............

On what grades are found in the various brands out there that are using stainless H/X's and/or other stainless components? It would be very interesting to compare all the different types and perhaps give some insight as to what the manufacturers are thinking or shooting for.
