Pool De-Humidification

Northern Climate (9 months of winter). Very large indoor lap pool. De-humidification. HELP!! have seen the Munter unit but they are $9000 in the box. Is it the only way to solve this problem? Pool size-15x60. Detatched pool building 60%glass-30x80. All radiant heated. Design temperature ten degrees.

    we have installed

several dectron units. they are the cadillac of pool dehumidification. www.dectron.com. have a rep come down and talk to the homeowner about pool temps, room temp etc. they can make a big difference in the unit which has to be installed.

    Lifebreath

I've used the LifeBreath pool dehumidifiers/HRV's for years. Highly recommended. Supplemental electric heat coils are available for the units to meet heating demand, if the radiant application falls short of design temps.

You can use a dectron as posted above. The usual arrangement is to dehumidify with it and use the warm condenser water to reheat the pool air or use it to heat the pool

    Or...

If it's not built yet - upgrade the glass to a higher thermal performance to raise the indoor surface temp of the glass to enable a higher interior ambient dewpoint and save energy and deumidification system costs. You will still need "some" dehumidification, but not as much with the conventional glass. Consider also suspended ceiling radiant heating panels along the glass since the radiant will also help warm up the interior surface of the glass somewhat, and allow the ambient interior dewpoint to float up a bit too.

Therma-Stor has a dehumidification system that is affordable for indoor pools. I have one for mine. Their website is www.thermastor.com

    How about this..

If your climate is cold (i.e. dry) for most of the year, how about dehumidifying using ventilation. Hook up a flat-plate hx to recover the heat, but not the humidity. Add a small reheat coil for the supply air as another zone off the radiant.

The ss hx is going to cost you, but the operating cost should be pretty low.

I have seen people build their own dehumidifier using a water-to-water heat pump, if you want to try that. Make sure you order the epoxy-coated coils..
