Pool Heater

Would like to use the heat from my AC to heat a swimming pool. Pool water never gets above 75 for much of the summer. Air temp can be in the 90s, would this not be an excellent cold source for the outside heat exchanger? How would you build a thing like this or is it already available? Any thoughts? Thanks, T.

refer to water heat exchanger
This has been done for many years in grocery stores, there is a mfr who makes a tank with referline in the tank, can't remember off hand the name. Call local refer supply company and ask. It was a heat reclaim tank that would then supply domestic hot water, still could be used for pool. Good luck. Also american standard makes shell and tube heat xs for this, refer co. will know also.0 -
Yes; excellent idea. I have a house in the Atlanta area where I did just that. You simply substitute a water cooled condenser for the air cooled one. Another option is to use a water source heat pump-off the shelf. My system in Atlanta is actually a heat pump, with a reversing valve and is a built-up system using a belt driven compressor; 6.5 tons. Measured efficiency with 85 degree pool water is an eer of 14.5. We use it in the spring and fall for heat until the water in the pool gets too cold. If at all possible the heat exchanger should be cupronickel to survive the pool water. Another useful addition is a desuperheater coil to heat domestic water.0 -
Domestic hot water
I use an Aquiefier, made by American Energy Products, to heat my domestic hot water. It heats the water so well that I had to install a tempering valve on the hot water discharge of my water heater to keep from scalding us. I even turn off the gas to the WH any time the air conditioner is on.
I don't see why you couldn't use a swimming pool heat exchanger to do the same thing. Just be sure, like Tom said. to use a HX that will handle the pool chemicals.
